Background of the Study
Visual storytelling on Instagram has revolutionized how language and imagery interact, influencing morphological practices in digital communication. Nigerian Instagram users often craft captions that complement visual content, blending indigenous expressions with global linguistic trends. This convergence has given rise to innovative morphological forms, including novel affixation, creative abbreviations, and hybrid lexical items that encapsulate cultural narratives (Adeniyi, 2023). The study explores how visual cues and storytelling techniques in Instagram captions drive morphological change, emphasizing the role of multimodality in shaping language. By analyzing a range of captions, this research investigates how digital imagery informs word formation and semantic nuance. The interplay between visuals and text not only enriches narrative expression but also fosters a dynamic linguistic environment where traditional morphology is reimagined. Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing importance of visual storytelling in digital media, little research has been conducted on its influence on morphological practices in Nigerian online communication. Traditional models of morphology do not account for the hybrid linguistic forms emerging from Instagram captions. This gap limits our understanding of how visuals and textual creativity interact to produce new word forms. Addressing this issue is essential for developing comprehensive linguistic models that encompass digital innovations and provide insights into the evolving nature of language in a visually dominated communication landscape (Chukwu, 2023).
